Teaser: “The Red Balloon”

THE SETTING sun radiated a deep pink light that set the prairie on fire. The savannah stretched as far as the eye could see and beyond, teeming with a multitude of life. A family of scimitar-horned oryx drank at a glassy watering hole whilst, nearby, a huge herd of quagga grazed the lush grass. Away to the west, a pride of Barbary lions had emerged from beneath the shade of a spiralling, forked Sigillaria tree. John Riddell and the Doctor surveyed this pristine landscape in silence from the edge of an escarpment that offered them this breathtaking view.

“Lost in thought, John?” asked the Doctor gently.

Riddell took a few more moments of silence before he spoke. “Before I met you, this place would have been like something out of a fairy tale. I mean, it still is, but… I think my instincts are changing.”

Synopsis: France. 1917. In the mud-filled trenches of the Western Front, the Germans, the British, and the Americans face each other in a bitter stalemate. Thousands have died but, for three bloody years, not an inch of ground has been gained. When a trio of strangers emerges from No Man’s Land bearing secret battle plans for a major British tank offensive, Lieutenant Colonel George S. Patton knows that the course of the war is about to change. Emboldened by this knowledge and by the extraordinary skills possessed by these outlandish operatives, he charges them with a dangerous reconnaissance mission.

The Doctor, Riddell, and Flo must penetrate enemy lines. There, on a hidden airfield, they discover the source of the strange energies they’ve been tracking since the TARDIS first fell onto this bleak battleground. The Flying Circus of Manfred von Richthofen—the legendary Red Baron—is prepared for the coming offensive, and their Fokker triplanes are equipped with advanced arms representing the wrong World War! It becomes clear that a brilliant but sinister influence has bent Germany’s leaders to his dominating will. The Master is near death, incinerated by the time vortex, stripped of his robotic frame, but as desperate and determined to survive as he has ever been. Soon, he will take a new body, and in that rejuvenated form he will lead Germany to victory in the Battle of Cambrai, corrupting a crucial tipping point in the history of the Great War. The Doctor and his companions will have to take to the skies to correct the course of history—and face the dreaded Red Baron, ace of aces, on the field of combat that he has mastered!


Teaser: “Over the Top”

“YOU HAVE BEEN UPGRADED! THE DOCTOR IS IRRELEVANT AND WILL BE DELETED! THE CYBERIAD WILL RISE!”

The phrases thundered over and over again in Riddell’s head, and all he could do was regard his cold, pale, expressionless visage in the mirror in front of him. Robotic arms bearing gleaming tools leant in and started to peel the skin from his face with medical precision. He couldn’t move a muscle, was powerless to resist. Slowly, his features began to disappear and a gleaming silver skull was revealed as his flesh was torn away—

John Riddell woke with a scream, his head pounding. It took a moment for him to recognise his surroundings, his bedroom aboard the TARDIS, and he let his breathing and heart rate slowly return to normal. Ideally, he needed more rest to recover fully from his injuries, but—setting aside the visceral nightmare—his well-honed instincts told him that something else was wrong. He wrenched himself from his bed, staggered to his feet, and made his way out into the corridor towards the control room. En route, he was met by a discombobulated and similarly upset Flo.

“Cyberiad Rising”

Synopsis: The Venturi were an advanced and accomplished race. Now, their civilisation has been annihilated, their wondrous homeworld transformed into a technological horror. Following the Viyrans into the heart of this high-tech holocaust, the Doctor, Riddell, and Flo must face their fears and inevitable infection to strike a blow against a familiar and unrelenting enemy. The conversion of the Venturi has allowed the Cybermen to transcend their limitations and attain awesome power, rendering them more adaptive and dangerous than ever!

As the travellers make their way through a surreal cityscape of living metal, their bodies begin to undergo a slow and unnatural change. Flesh and blood are gradually being transformed into circuits and steel, and the trio discovers that their subconscious minds are now linked. The Cyberiad is all-knowing, encompassing every living creature on the planet. As their bodies fade, so too does their sense of self. John Riddell, the sole human in this doomed expedition, suffers worst of all. He can see and hear James Sampson and Lillian Riddell—his greatest rival and a sister tragically lost—haunting manifestations of his shattered psyche. Lillian threatens him, and Sampson tempts him, each goading Riddell into embracing an inhuman influence. Slowly but surely, the self-reliant adventurer is losing himself to the Cyberiad. The culmination of his agonizing trial will mark the birth of a powerful new Cyber-Planner, one who will usher in an era of unprecedented conquest for the Cybermen.

The Venturi and John Riddell have been lost, but if the Doctor can outmanoeuvre a trusted companion transformed into a formidable foe, he just might prevent this insidious infection from spreading to the galaxy beyond!


Teaser: “Cyberiad Rising”

THE DOCTOR was lost in thought, his brow deeply furrowed in a contemplative frown as he walked behind the trio of Viyrans through the corridors of their command ship. Riddell and Flo followed behind him, congratulating one another noisily on how they had saved the mighty Shadow Proclamation from the devastation that the errant Starmind had threatened, replaying their roles with ever more exaggeration and aggrandisement.

Suddenly, the Doctor stopped in his tracks, whirled around and glared at them both. One wordless stare from his piercing eyes was enough to bring a sudden halt to their conversation. Usually the most effervescent person in the room, the Doctor’s moments of seriousness were all the more intense for their comparative rarity. His point made and his travelling companions silenced, he resumed his march in deep thought. Riddell and Flo exchanged glances like a couple of rebuked schoolchildren, shrugged, and then followed behind him in cowed silence. The Viyrans had led them all the way back to the waiting TARDIS before Riddell first summoned the courage to speak again, seeking the break the tension.

Synopsis: The Starmind is the most advanced artificial sun ever created, a nuclear furnace possessing limitless energy and a brilliant artificial intelligence. The Starmind is powerful, adaptive, intent—and it has gone mad! Aboard a Viyran command ship, the Doctor, Riddell, and Flo learn the incredible history of this marvel of stellar engineering as they desperately attempt to outrun it. Its intentions are ominous and its target is clear, for the rogue sun is on a direct course for the Shadow Proclamation—stronghold of justice, hallowed font of galactic law, and the foremost repository of strategic information regarding countless civilizations.

Upon reaching the Shadow Proclamation’s base of operations in the heart of an asteroid field, the Doctor witnesses a most innovative invasion. A new star takes its place in the heavens and begins its slow takeover of the base’s photonic computer systems using nothing more than the pervasive, relentless power of sunlight. Soon, the unparalleled defences of the galaxy’s greatest law enforcement agency are turned against them, and the resulting chaos leads the Doctor and his companions to uncover inconvenient truths. There is a dark side to the justice of the Shadow Architects, and the Doctor will have to expose their secrets if he hopes to use the dark to overcome the light.


Teaser: “The Starmind”

THE AFRICAN savannah thundered with the combined sound of hooves and military boots. An unlikely foursome kicked up huge swathes of dust in their wake as their sanctuary, a trusty blue box, began to grow from a mere speck on the horizon to resemble the unmistakable form of the TARDIS. Even as it grew closer, however, their pursuers edged ever nearer.

For all her adventures both in and out of the TARDIS, Marilyn was exhilarated at an opportunity to race on her home planet once again, her muscles rippling and her mane flowing resplendently in the warm breeze. The Doctor looked to be enjoying himself, too, grinning from ear to ear as he roared on encouragement to his trusty steed from the saddle. Rather less comfortable was Riddell, an accomplished horse rider himself but here looking and feeling altogether out of sorts, perched behind the Doctor and holding onto his midriff as if for dear life. Keeping pace alongside them, Flo demonstrated how his UNIT training had kept him in the peak of condition, his mighty Judoon legs powering through the wilderness.
